Welcome new students

Welcome to John Flamsteed Community School

Welcome from our Headteacher

It is an honour and privilege to be the Head Teacher of John Flamsteed Community School. I am absolutely committed to ensuring we provide the best quality care and education for the children of our community.  One of our favourite times of year is when we welcome our new cohort of Year 6 students to look around our school with their families and get to show the students what it is like to be a student at our school.
Our unique and rural location means that we draw from over 30 feeder primary schools.    Only 50% of our intake is from our catchment area with the other 50% from beyond so we enjoy welcoming a wide range of students from all different locations to our school.  As a result, we spend care and attention to getting our transition process right.
My vision for the children at John Flamsteed is one of ambition and aspiration; for all our learners to become “nothing short of remarkable”. I regularly tell the students that my hopes and dreams for them are that they can become anything they want to be and do anything they want to do; a remarkable future is all within their grasp. My vision to achieve this centres around ambition, commitment and pride. We use the tagline “We are ambitious. We are committed. We are proud” which makes up The JF Way.
Thank you for taking the time to look around our website and I hope you enjoy discovering more about our great school. I look forward to working with all parents and carers in order to provide the highest quality education and experience to the young people of our community.

Welcome from our Head of Year 7

Welcome to JFCS and thank you for taking the time to read a little bit about us! I hope you are excited at the thought of potentially joining our school in the future. As a school, we appreciate how big the decision is for a student and their family to choose the right secondary school and we want to support you on this journey and would like to inform you of what we have to offer with regards to transition from primary to secondary school to try and make this as smooth as possible and to ensure all children have a flying start at JFCS. Currently we offer the following:
  • Liaising with primary schools (March) – after National Offer Day, I liaise with the feeder primary schools to start to find out about our new cohort of students
  • Visiting primary schools (April – May) – I meet with the Year 6 Teachers/Head Teachers to discuss the Year 6 students at their school and meet with some of the students, delivering a get to know activity and answering their questions
  • Three full induction days (June) – every student is given the opportunity to take part in the 13 different subject we have to offer, meet their Form Tutor and their new peers in their tutor group and give the students a taster of what life is like at JFCS
  • A transition parent/carer evening (June) – this is held at the end of the three induction days, giving parents/carers the opportunity to ask any questions
  • An extra transition afternoon (June) – for students with SEND/vulnerable students/students who may find the transition to secondary school a little more difficult than others
  • Summer School (August) – a weeks worth of creative and sporting activities over five days in the penultimate week of the six weeks holiday. Students are invited to this if their primary school feel they are going to struggle with the change of primary to secondary school
Our aim during the transition process and the first half term in September is to ensure all students have settled in at JFCS and for them to feel like they have always been part of the JFCS community. We are always communicating with primary schools to try and find out as much about the students before they join us so we know how best to support them both pastorally and academically. We always strive for our students to be nothing short of remarkable. I look forward to seeing what your child’s version of remarkable is if they choose to join our JFCS family.

Head of Year 7

This is what the current Year 7 Parents had to say about the transition

“Staff are very approachable and took the time to make sure our daughter felt very comfortable starting John Flamsteed”

“The 3 transition days were brilliant. My child thoroughly enjoyed themselves which made it so much easier for their first day at JFCS”
“My child has settled in really quickly, really happy with all the support from the school”
“My child had the best start thank you. The summer school was a massive hit and helped a nervous 11 year old.”

“I believe the children being put in their form groups for the transition days really helped the children to build new friendships and know before their first official day at school where their ‘base’ was. Also, the Learning Ambassadors were a valuable source of support for the transition days too. My son left those days saying he already felt like a JF student.”

“I found the communication to be excellent and everything was very well organised. All of my queries were answered very quickly!”
“My child felt prepared for moving up to secondary school and, as a parent, I felt well informed.”
“Cannot fault the transition at all, very very happy with the communication and the welcome we all received.”

“As starts to new schools go – I couldn’t have asked for a more inclusive and thoughtful approach. Really grateful.”

“I feel very reassured that I made the right choice of school for my children.”

“Can’t fault the transition process, my child has been given as much help that’s been needed.”
“We feel our child was supported amazingly. She was joining the school alone and with transition days, summer school and matching for form group – she is a really happy year 7 pupil.”

“Outstanding and the support has been amazing. I could not have asked for more. Staff have gone above and beyond to ensure my child and his peers had a great transition and are happy.”

“We are very satisfied and very pleased with all you have considered and done to make the transition process as smooth as possible.”
